Periodontal simply means “the tissue around the teeth.” Periodontists specialize in the treatment and surgery of this area, which is often characterized by gum disease. Plaque is the most common element causing gum disease.
Unfortunately, periodontal-related problems are often discovered after they have persisted for an extended period of time. Proper oral hygiene, daily dental care and regular dental checkups will minimize the risk of gum disease. Gum disease ranges from mild (gingivitis) to moderate (periodintitis) to the severe (periodontitis). Treatments are available for every case of gum disease.
Common problems associated with gum disease:
- “Long” teeth (receding gum lines expose the root portions of your teeth)
- Discolored or deteriorating tooth structure
- Gum depressions (holes in between the teeth in the gum tissue)
- Infected gum line (discoloration or inflammation of the gum tissue)
- Tooth loss or tooth movement
The effects of gum disease can be damaging to your dental health. However, through proper preventive care and oral hygiene, you can avoid problems associated with gum disease.

Periodontal Disease
According to the World Health Organization’s World Health Oral Report 2003, periodontal disease affects more then 85% of adults, age 35 – 44, in the United States and throughout the world.
In our office, untreated periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. And many recent studies have shown that there is a connection between gingivitis or periodontal disease and serious systemic diseases like: diabetes, heart disease, pre term and low birth weight babies, respiratory disease, pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer Disease. Left untreated, periodontal disease will lead to mobility, bad breath, and tooth loss.
My office aggressively treats this serious disease with the most advanced forms of approved treatments. If you are concerned about your periodontal health call us at (614) 491-5511 for an examination.
Oral Cancer Screening
The American Dental Association reports than nearly 35,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year and approximately 7500 people die each year from oral cancer. It is because of these statistics that we provide oral cancer screenings at every dental exam and take necessary actions if lesions are found. One of the best ways to prevent oral cancer is to abstain from alcohol and tobacco use.
